Each Kindness

Title: Each Kindness

Author: Jacqueline Woodson

Pages: 32

Summary(from Amazon.com): When Chloe’s teacher gives a lesson about how even small acts of kindness can change the world, Chloe is stung by the lost opportunity for friendship, and thinks about how much better it could have been if she’d shown a little kindness toward Maya, the new girl.

Accompanying Discussion: Discuss  a time when you hurt someone by leaving them out or making fun of them, or when that happened to you. What is something that you can do tomorrow to be kinder than you were today?

Accompanying Activities:  For older students: The entire story is told from Chloe’s point-of-view. Chloe seems to be unaware of the pain that she may be causing Maya. Write a scene of the story from Maya’s perspective. Other great suggestions are here, and check out this great post-it activity, which could be done with drawings as well for younger folks!
